Following in their families’ footsteps, many of the keepers in Dublin Zoo have had parents and grandparents work in the park before them. But what is it really like to be a Zoo Keeper? One of the oldest zoos in the world, the keepers in Dublin Zoo look after over 600 different types of animal, from curious creepy crawlies to gigantic Asiatic elephants, from cuddly bunnies to ferocious lions and tigers!

Susan O’Brien has been a keeper in Dublin Zoo for over 10 years, having grown up with a love of animals. She tells us what it’s like working in the zoo, how she remembers all the animals names and most importantly – what her favourite animal is! Susan takes special care of the South American animals. She works alongside her sister Pamela, who is also a keeper in the zoo. She has trained to handle all sorts of animals, from the little lambs in Family Farm and Bongos in the African Plains to Monty and Brian and the zoo’s 5 meter, 50 kilo Burmese rock Pythons.

Susan will be familiar to most people as one of the regular face’s of “The Zoo” TV programme on RTÉ. As part of the Family Explorer Series at The Festival of Curiosity, exploring real life explorers from the Stars to the Sea and from the Zoo to your Garden.
