Trouble Come Find Me

Ciara Sidine

All this menopausal woman wanted was to be a rock goddess…

One night, wine taken, a singer-songwriter whose career is on the rocks pitches a show to an arts festival. To her horror, they agree to stage it. Despite impressions, she hasn’t yet written a word of the ‘breath-taking piece of musical theatre inspired by heroines of folksong’.

Thus begins a desperate scramble to create it. Laundry piles up, hot flushes rise like a tsunami and, as the kids beg for anything other than pasta, her life starts to unravel.

Darkly comical, searingly honest, Trouble Come Find Me is a new play with original music that explores creativity, motherhood, rage and age, as one woman’s journey into folksong forces her to confront her own troubles. Along the way, the true events are revealed behind one of the most popular ballads of all time, ‘Frankie and Johnny’.

About the Company

Ciara Sidine is a singer and songwriter who was born and reared in Dublin. She has written and produced two albums to critical acclaim, Shadow Road Shining and Unbroken Line, and toured in Ireland and beyond. A passion for recording women’s voices is reflected both in her songwriting and her work as a book publisher.

Ciara’s earliest memories are of sing-songs at family gatherings. ‘Growing up, singing was part of ordinary life, like sleeping or eating, and there was great respect for songs of every kind. Over time, I realised the richness of that inheritance. Who knows how far back the songs we inherit take us, or in what ways they connect us to our cultural stories. Trouble Come Find Me is about exploring women’s stories in folksong, both in songs that survived and those forgotten in archives – but it’s ultimately a woman’s journey to her own story.’

Ciara has worked for over three decades as a book editor and is a publisher at Hachette Ireland. Trouble Come Find Me, a play with music, is her first full length theatre performance piece.

Early development support provided by Sarah Baxter with the support of The Arts Council, Aoife Spillane-Hinks via Axis Ballymun’s Keep it LIT Department, and Nicole Rourke.
