But We’re Right

Written and directed by Morghan Welt with music and sound design by Saoirse Miller

Europe is not what it used to be. And things are changing too fast for AJ and Beibhinn.

Their hometown is full of strangers and welcome signs, their friends and neighbours are all getting laid off – and nobody seems to care about them. Stuck in patriotic slogans and the fear of being left behind, the girls start railing against “the foreigners”. Until one day, Beibhinn loses all security and needs to build herself a new life someplace else. Faced with this involuntary departure, the two suddenly need to reconsider what home really is, what being right means, and how far they are willing to go to keep things as they were.
“But We’re Right” is a politically provocative two-hander interrogating the question: Why do more and more young Europeans vote right?

This piece of new, original work will mark the professional debut of theatre- maker Morghan Welt and composer Saoirse Miller.

Funded and supported by the European Union and the Goethe-Institute, the play will celebrate its world premiere in Smock Alley Theatre this summer.

ABOUT THE COMPANY
“But We’re Right” is the fifth collaboration between theatre-maker Morghan Welt and composer Saoirse Miller. The German-Irish duo has presented their work in the Samuel Beckett Theatre, as part of Scene + Heard Festival 2024, and they are now delighted to premiere their new, original play in Smock Alley Theatre’s Boys’ School.

Morghan Welt is an emerging writer and director for theatre and opera originally from Berlin. Her interest lies in research-driven, political and ambitious productions, as well as big ensemble work and adaptations. In 2023, she graduated with a First-Class Honours B.A. in Drama & Theatre Studies from Trinity College Dublin, where she also received a scholarship and a Gold Medal for outstanding academic achievements. As Assistant Director, she has worked for the Saluzzo Opera Summer Festival, the Neuköllner Opera, the Berliner Ensemble and the Lyric Opera Studio Weimar.

Saoirse Miller is an independent composer, producer and singer-songwriter from Dublin. Her repertoire explores distinctive new-wave trad as well as alternative electro pop. Her live set-up blends music and poetry with live audio-reactive visuals, to teleport the audience into her mystical world. A recent First Class graduate from Trinity College Dublin with a degree in Music, Saoirse has played in venues all over Dublin City such as The Workmans Club, The Grand Social, All my Friends, Workmans Cellar, Hensteeth, as well as her own Headline show in Crowbar Terrace (Button Factory) and the 2023 Achill Island Music Festival.
