AN 424: AN BUS GO dtí AN GHEALCHATHAIR

THE BUS TO THE BRIGHTCITY

IMRAM Féile Litríochta Gaeilge

Tar linn ar aistear draíochta an 424, an bus a thógann muid ó dhorchadas na maidine thiar i gCarna tríd bhóithre casta Chonamara go dtí an Ghealchathair. Fág ‘aiteann, fraoch, fiataíl, srutháin, claíocha, tolláin, gleannta’ i do dhiaidh agus tú ar oilithreacht i dtreo na Gaillimhe. Cas leis na carachtair uile a bhordálann an bus: Lugh Lámhfhada lena chuid gruaige rua a thuirlingíonn i gcónaí ag stop na bhForbacha; an cailín faoileánda a chaitheann an turas ag canadh léi féin agus a fhágann cleite ina diaidh; an seanfhear a bhfuil cos leis san uaigh agus an chos eile ar bhus 424; an bhean a bhíonn ag cabaireacht agus ag argóint leis an duine dofheicthe atá lena hais sa suíochán.

Everyone who lives in Conamara or who has visited knows the road the 424 bus takes west from Galway city, along the coast, past lakes, bogs and hills to quiet fields where men and cattle stop to gaze at the colourful bus. Long ago the driver might stop to deliver boxes of chickens at houses on the way; a man might burst into a hoarse rendition of the fifty verses of Úna Bhán. These days voices from Ukraine, Eastern Europe and Asia join those of the native speakers and the woman who lost her Irish in America as they sway to and fro on the road to Galway.

Poet Laoighseach Ní Choistealbha, novelist Jackie Mac Donncha and poet and musician Cúán de Búrca read from new work inspired by their journeys on the bus; with music from Trá Pháidín, whose first album was An 424, and visuals from broadcaster and film maker Donal Dineen. Curated by Majella Ní Chríocháin.
