The Rivals at Smock Alley Theatre 1662

The Rivals

Love triangles abound, manners are thrown aside

Smock Alley Theatre presents as its eighth in-house production, Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s much loved Comedy of Manners, The Rivals.
[blockquote_right] “How charming will poverty be with him!” – Lydia Languish[/blockquote_right]

The wealthy Lydia Languish, brought up on romance novels, is searching for a suitor and only a poor man will do, so it is no wonder she falls for the penniless Beverley. However her formidable aunt Mrs. Malaprop, through a series of hilarious blunders, raises serious objections to Lydia’s choice. As a play where people pretend to be someone they’re not in order to win the day, where appearances are over-valued and realities ignored, The Rivals continues to be relevant to today’s society.

The whirlwind plot and wondrous wit of Sheridan’s play has delighted audiences for over 240 years.

This historical play will be performed here at Smock Alley for the first time since late 1775, in the theatre Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s father Thomas Sheridan was manager of in the 1740’s & 1750’s.
