After their sell out Twelfth Night and five star Hamlet, PurpleCoat return to Smock Alley at the start of a UK and Ireland tour with Shakespeare’s greatest play, King Lear. Using the same innovative style that transfered Hamlet to 1980’s Liverpool, PurpleCoat present an immersive and horrifying vision of King Lear in the 400th anniversary year of Shakespeare’s death.
Now ArtsCouncil funded and with recent praise from Judi Dench and Kenneth Brannagh, don’t miss Shakespeare’s greatest play, which PurpleCoat are proud to be bringing to Smock Alley this summer.
Since PurpleCoat’s founding in 2008 they have risen to be hailed as ‘one of the UK’s fastest rising ensembles’ with a body of work that has seen them perform across the UK and Ireland and gain support from key industry figures including Judi Dench and Kenneth Brannagh.
They have collaborated with the RSC and National Theatre, and last year their production of Hamlet gained a clean sweep of five-star reviews when it played exclusively in Smock Alley. This production is due to be featured on the BBC. PurpleCoat have also previously performed in Smock Alley when they began their tour of Twelfth Night here in 2014.
