Asperger’s Are Us
18 July | 6pm & 8pm | Boys’ School
The first comedy troupe composed of people with Asperger Syndrome performs their trademark absurdist sketches, ripe with hilarious wordplay and unexpected breaking of social conventions.
Asperger’s Are Us formed on the North shore of Massachusetts in the summer of 2010 after New Michael Ingemi, Jack Hanke, and Ethan Finlan graduated from a summer camp where Noah Britton was their counsellor.
“Audiences don’t usually know what to expect from Asperger’s Are Us, a Boston sketch comedy troupe made up solely of artists on the autism spectrum. Will they use self-deprecating humor about life with Asperger’s syndrome? Are they hoping to shed light on a serious condition? Will they be something like Sheldon, the socially inept character on CBS’s ‘The Big Bang Theory’?
The answer, it turns out, is none of the above. Instead of focusing on the condition, the four men who make up the troupe perform skits and monologues that reflect their thoughts, perspectives and offbeat sensibilities, often characterized by deadpan and absurd humor… the guys are not looking for sympathy laughs or polite applause. Their show is not an autism awareness campaign, they say. They want people to laugh simply because they’re funny.” – NewYork Times
The hilarious Conor O’Toole will perform as the opening act ahead of Asperger’s Are Us, LIVE! Conor O’Toole has been bringing his offbeat comedy stylings to Dublin audiences for over eight years. An Edinburgh Fringe favourite, his shows have garnered numerous four and five star reviews. Whether compressing the history of fonts into a light show for children, playing songs about dying professions on his trusty spring-on-a-stick, or eating half of a poisonous dosage of cloves, Conor attempts to entertain people in ways they haven’t been entertained before, and usually succeeds.
